Campaign Launch Cambridge

On Saturday 7 May, Daniel Zeichner launched his campaign in the heart of Cambridge in Coleridge, with a hoard of Labour supporters new and old ready to speak to residents in the area and start the real campaign ahead of the 8 June.

The group heard from Alex Mayer, MEP for the East of England, who supports Daniel’s campaign and endorses him as the best man for the job in Cambridge. She considered the need to elect one of the most pro-European Labour MPs in Parliament who will keep up the fight against the hard Brexit which the Tories are pushing for.

Daniel Zeichner MP has promised a “rights revolution” for Cambridge renters after Labour’s Shadow Housing Secretary, John Healey, announced new policies to toughen legal minimum standards for all private rented homes.

Labour plans to deal with landlords who let out dangerous or substandard homes after it released an analysis showing for the first time the true cost of England’s 1.3m substandard private rented properties – now housing 400,000 families with children nationwide. Tenants now spend £800m every month – £9.6bn a year – on housing which the government classifies as “non-decent”. Around a quarter of this – £2.3bn per year – is paid by housing benefit.

Daniel Zeichner celebrated “amazing progress” at a visit to Netherhall School  on Friday 28 April at 9am at The Netherhall School, Queen Edith’s Way.

The visit came as Netherhall staff celebrate their achievement since two OfSTED ‘Requires Improvement’ outcomes in 2013 and 2014. Following the appointment of a new Principal in 2016, who has overseen many changes, a recent Local Authority review supported the school’s self-evaluation that it is now delivering high standards across all inspection categories.

Daniel Zeichner has backed calls from the Bicycle Association to make the Bikeability training scheme available to all children after a recent study reported a worrying decline in children’s cycling ownership and access rates.

At present, the Department for Transport (DfT) has allocated £50m from 2016 until 2020 for Bikeability in schools via grants to local authorities and School Games Host Schools (SGHS). Training places cost £40 per head. However, demand is currently outstripping supply. Only half of primary schools in England receive Bikeability and bids from local authorities and SGHS exceed available funding.

Daniel Zeichner has said that elected representatives must “practice what they preach” when he joined the first MPs to sign the pledge to divest the MPs’ pension fund – worth £612m in assets – from fossil fuels.

In 2016 alone, the Parliamentary Contributory Pension Fund (PCPF) invested millions of Pounds of public money in fossil fuel companies – including £5.59m in BP and £4.9m in Shell. Since the value of both companies’ stock is based on their entire fossil fuel reserves and not just the small percentage that can be used safely, these investments are both high in risk and incompatible with the Government’s commitment under the Paris Agreement to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.

Daniel Zeichner has slammed as “undemocratic and tawdry” the Higher Education and Research Bill, which would allow almost all universities in England to introduce annual increases in tuition fees until 2020 without improving teaching, as the Government tries to push the legislation through Parliament before the General Election.

The Government initially argued that the bill would make higher fees dependent on better teaching for students. But this requirement will not come in until 2020/21, meaning universities can raise fees each year without improving outcomes for their students. This year, the cap on fees will increase to £9,250 per year.

HomelessnessSpeaking in the House of Commons today, Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, slammed the Housing Minister for the rise in homelessness in the city, which he said so saddens residents and is so hard for those without homes.

He said that in recent discussions with local homelessness charity Wintercomfort, it had been suggested that city Landlords are increasingly unwilling to let to people on housing benefit because of insecure employment. He suggested that cracking down on insecure employment, such as temporary and zero-hours contracts would help tackle the housing crisis.
