Daniel Zeichner, Member of Parliament for Cambridge, has offered a bleak assessment for cash-strapped services following a knife-edge budget vote at Cambridgeshire County Council yesterday following months of deadlock.
 
The County Council budget was thrown into uncertainty when Shire Hall Conservatives refused their own Government’s policy of raising council tax by 2% as well as a special adult social care levy by increasing council tax by a further 2%.

A new startup, based in the heart of Cambridge, is developing an innovative technology platform with the potential to revolutionise at-home care for older people in the UK.

Cambridge Assisted Living Technologies (Cambridge ALT), was set up by six science and technology PhD students from the University of Cambridge with the aim of allowing older people to live in their own home for longer. Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner visited Cambridge University Hospital at Addenbrooke’s this morning to see first hand how A&E staff are coping during the tough winter period.

Mr Zeichner met with Dr Mike More, interim Chair of CUH and they toured the Accident and Emergency department to see how staff on the ground are getting by.

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner joined colleagues, charity representatives and patients at an event at the House of Commons to find out more about the challenges dealt with by people living with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL).
 
CLL is the most common type of leukaemia - a cancer of the white blood cells – in adults. It means that stem cells start overproducing white blood cells that are not fully developed – in CLL, these are called lymphocytes. Although many people with CLL will not have symptoms for a long time, when they develop they can include an increased number of infections, increased tiredness and fatigue and bleeding and bruising more easily. It is estimated that around 3,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with CLL each year.

Councillors and campaigners against plans to slash Cambridgeshire County Council's spend on library books by £325,000 from April 2017 have won further support from Cambridge MP, Daniel Zeichner, as the campaign to save library books picks up pace. Professor Nick Gay, a Fellow of Christ's College, and Councillor Jocelynne Scutt, Labour's West Chesterton County Councillor, will join forces at the Full Council Budget debate meeting on 14th February to persuade the County Council to agree to reinstate the full budget for library books and newspapers.

Councillor Richard Johnson, the Executive Councillor for Communities at the Labour led Cambridge City Council, has said that the Council is working hard to support children living in poverty in the City after a landmark report was published on the state of child health in the UK, which found a clear link between poverty and poor child health outcomes. A report from the think tank Centre for Cities also found that Cambridge was the most unequal city in terms of income distribution.

Daniel Zeichner MP joined students from Cambridge Regional College, and even tried his hand operating a digger, this coming Saturday for ‘Construction Careers Day’.

The College joined forces with leading employers, including Flannery Plant Hire, Mick George, A-Plant, Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall, Barhale and Lynch Plant Hire, to host a Construction Careers Day to bring prospective apprentices and employers together.  The hands-on event takes place at the College and job-hunters will be able to have a go at operating a digger, try their hand in a simulator and talk to employers about apprenticeship opportunities on offer – and even find their perfect apprenticeship on the day.
