Daniel Zeichner MP attended the Shell Springboard awards ceremony to celebrate the UK’s leading entrepreneurs building the low-carbon economy.

Each year, the Shell Springboard programme supports and awards the most inspiring UK enterprises with innovative business ideas for a lower-carbon future. At this year’s ceremony, three companies will be awarded £40,000 each. They will then compete at the Shell Springboard London event for an opportunity to win an additional £100,000 of equity-free investment.

Daniel Zeichner MP attended Sleep Easy in support of participants who spent one night sleeping rough to raise awareness of the hardship endured by homeless young people and raise funds for YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough.

Daniel Zeichner got involved in the event in Cambridge as part of the first ever national YMCA Sleep Easy Week which saw YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough join forces with 14 other local YMCAs across the country to raise awareness of youth homelessness.

Daniel Zeichner MP pledged to take on the unacceptable lack of progress in tackling young people’s mental health and joined MPs from all political parties in swearing to tackle mental health at an event in Parliament.

The event came as new figures from mental health research charity MQ showed that 42 per cent of people in the UK believe that mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are now an inevitable part of life. 84 per cent said that not enough is being done to tackle mental health. 68 per cent of parents believe that having more education about mental health could prevent future suffering.

A new startup, based in the heart of Cambridge, is developing an innovative technology platform with the potential to revolutionise at-home care for older people in the UK.

Cambridge Assisted Living Technologies (Cambridge ALT), was set up by six science and technology PhD students from the University of Cambridge with the aim of allowing older people to live in their own home for longer. Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner joined colleagues, charity representatives and patients at an event at the House of Commons to find out more about the challenges dealt with by people living with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL).
 
CLL is the most common type of leukaemia - a cancer of the white blood cells – in adults. It means that stem cells start overproducing white blood cells that are not fully developed – in CLL, these are called lymphocytes. Although many people with CLL will not have symptoms for a long time, when they develop they can include an increased number of infections, increased tiredness and fatigue and bleeding and bruising more easily. It is estimated that around 3,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with CLL each year.
