At the inaugural hearing of the Science and Technology Committee Cambridge's MP Daniel Zeichner grilled Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson MP on the impact of the government's immigration policies and possible withdrawal from the EU on science and universities.

The Cambridge MP asked the minister what evidence there was that immigration controls impacted on universities' ability to attract and retain the best scientific talent.

fox.jpgDaniel Zeichner MP has joined forces with well known animal welfare activist and Queen guitarist Dr Brian May in fight to keep the ban on hunting in place ahead of a free vote to amend the Hunting Act due to take place this Wednesday 15th July.

Daniel Zeichner MP and Brian May discussed the Conservative plan to make changes to the Hunting Act and pledged to work together to battle for animal welfare and keep the ban on hunting in place during this parliament.

Cambridge’s MP Daniel Zeichner visited Endomag, a Cambridge company, which is one of three finalists for this year’s Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award. The winner will be awarded a gold medal and a £50,000 cash prize at the Academy's annual awards dinner in London next week.

Veteran.jpgDaniel Zeichner MP met D-Day hero Ken Bright to support his battle get the medal he deserves.

Mr Bright was a member of the Royal Navy's Landing Craft Infantry and ferried troops during the D-Day landings. 

One year ago, the Government of France decided to recognise the selfless acts of heroism and determination displayed by all surviving veterans of the Normandy landings, and of the wider campaigns to liberate France in 1944, by awarding them a top French honour, the Legion d’Honneur.

However bureaucratic delays mean Mr Bright and other veterans have not yet received their medals.

Cambridge's MP Daniel Zeichner will sit on the Science and Technology Committee. The cross-party Committee undertakes detailed scrutiny of Government policy and monitors the Government Office for Science which is based within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.  The Committee has a broad remit and can examine the activities of departments where they have implications for, or made use of, science, engineering, technology and research.

Labour MP for Cambridge Daniel Zeichner has slammed the Chancellor’s announcement in today’s budget that University maintenance grants for lower income students in England and Wales will be scrapped from September 2016.

5,697 students at Anglia Ruskin University and 2,720 at the at University of Cambridge currently receive maintenance grants according to figures from the HEFCI.

The full grant is worth £3,387 a year for students from families with annual incomes of £25,000 or less.
