Cambridge's MP Daniel Zeichner will sit on the Science and Technology Committee. The cross-party Committee undertakes detailed scrutiny of Government policy and monitors the Government Office for Science which is based within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.  The Committee has a broad remit and can examine the activities of departments where they have implications for, or made use of, science, engineering, technology and research.

Labour MP for Cambridge Daniel Zeichner has slammed the Chancellor’s announcement in today’s budget that University maintenance grants for lower income students in England and Wales will be scrapped from September 2016.

5,697 students at Anglia Ruskin University and 2,720 at the at University of Cambridge currently receive maintenance grants according to figures from the HEFCI.

The full grant is worth £3,387 a year for students from families with annual incomes of £25,000 or less.

“Everyone understands that during a major construction project there will be inconvenience – but the problems we have seen in recent weeks have been unacceptable. I met Greater Anglia representatives last week and told them about the problems that people have reported to me and what I have seen myself, and made it clear that this is unacceptable. The car-parking and cycle-parking situation has been poor for months, with no clear system for people to be dropped off or for short-term parking.

bike.jpgDaniel Zeichner MP has presented a duo of Cambridge cleaners, Ann Marie Morgan and Szilveszter Hajnal, with certificates for completing their cleaning skills training. The pair are part of a project run by Cambridge charity Wintercomfort which offers free training and work-based learning for those that are homeless or vulnerably housed.

The cleaners work for Social Enterprise Overstream Clean which offers professional cleaning services for offices and business premises across Cambridge. The cleaners travel on fully equipped cargo bicycles enabling them to undertake a wide range of cleaning jobs, while keeping costs low, the environment clean and crucially for Cambridge not having to worry about parking.
