DZ_Xmas_card-_small.jpg2014 has been a tough year for many people in Cambridge – more and more have been turning to the foodbank, thousands are trapped on low-pay while prices for essentials keep rising. In response to the Adjournment Debate in the House of Commons today on Mental Health Services in Cambridgeshire, Daniel Zeichner, Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate says:

I welcome this opportunity to highlight the challenges facing mental health services in Cambridgeshire and across the country. Sadly, our mental health system is failing at a time when it should be being made a greater priority. The coalition has been strong on rhetoric about improving mental health services, but the reality on the ground is very different. Earlier this year in Cambridge, service users had to occupy buildings for months to win a reprieve for life-changing services at Lifeworks.

Cambridge Foodbank is playing a vital role in helping very vulnerable
people in and around Cambridge – but public authorities should be doing
more to help, says Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner
following a recent visit.

Mr Zeichner joined City Councillor for Abbey Ward Richard Johnson on a
tour of the Cambridge Foodbank warehouse, and discussed the latest
statistics on usage of the service with managers and volunteers.

The latest statistics show 4712 people receiving support from the
foodbank in the last year, of whom over a third (1664) are children.
Over a quarter were turning to the foodbank because of very low income,
with the majority facing a short-term crisis caused by delays and
changes to benefits.

The LibDems and Tories have once again acted to “put rip off fees in the pockets of agents rather than roofs over the heads of tenants” claimed Labour’s Daniel Zeichner after a vote last night in the House of Lords.

Tenants and landlords both pay their letting agent for arranging their tenancy contracts. On average tenants pay £355 to their lettings agents every time they move – while Shelter found some tenants being charged as much as £700 in total.  54% of people surveyed said they faced financial difficulties covering such fees.

Ed Miliband’s fighting speech in London this morning has really started next year’s general election campaign, says Cambridge Labour candidate Daniel Zeichner. Mr Zeichner was at the speech and says party supporters left the event enthused and inspired:

This is the Ed Miliband I backed for leader – passionate about challenging the unfairness and division that runs right through our country, and right through our divided city of Cambridge. He is right to challenge the complacency of Cameron and Clegg who claim that the economy is fixed, when we know in Cambridge that thousands are turning to the foodbank, thousands earn below the living wage, and increasing numbers find themselves on zero-hours contracts. He is right to criticise their inaction on the housing crisis in Cambridge, where new homes are snapped up by buy-to-rent landlords who then charge sky-rocketing rents to tenants.
