Following a fantastic campaign by students at King's College Cambridge, many of them members of Cambridge Universities Labour Club, the college has voted to budget to pay all staff the Living Wage next year. Reports in the Guardian newspaper that the long-awaited move by Papworth Heart Hospital to Cambridge have been scuppered by the Coalition Government have been slammed by Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner. He accuses Conservative and Liberal Democrat health ministers of playing politics with one of the most cherished NHS institutions. Building of the new facility at the Cambridge Bio-medical campus is scheduled to start in just a few months time, but the Guardian reports that the Government has stepped in to consider a rethink, to help bail-out the financially troubled Peterborough Hospital.

Today's report from the Resolution Foundation, 'The State of Living Standards' details the decline in living standards for many people in work in cities like Cambridge, and follows recent evidence from the Centre for Cities showing that real incomes fell on average £31 a week in Cambridge last year. The Resolution Foundation conclude that:  "it has become harder to live a comfortable life on a modest or even typical income in modern Britain", and that: "households have taken a large and permanent hit to their living standards."

Newly unemployed people need help with basic skills immediately, Daniel Zeichner told Radio Cambridgeshire's Chris Mann on the BBC Drivetime show.  He was talking following the announcement by Shadow Work Minister Rachel Reeves that a Labour Government would test all new claimants to check that they have sufficient literacy, numeracy and IT skills - and help them with training if they don't.

Responding to the news that University Vice Chancellors received 8% pay increases last year, Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner has contrasted the pay rise for the Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University with low-paid staff in the university: "In a university which has some thousand staff earning less than the living wage, it is profoundly insensitive for the person at the top to be given a twenty thousand pound pay rise. For thousands of university staff who have been told that there is no money for them to have more than 1% it is quite extraordinary that completely different rules are applied to those who already earn so much more."
