Daniel_Zeichner_NHS_-_comp.jpgReacting to the announcement by Cambridgeshire Clinical Commissioning Group that the Addenbrookes consortium has won the contract to provide Older People’s services, Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner says:

I am delighted that Addenbrookes has won the contract – this will reassure patients who faced being guinea pigs in an unwanted trial, and reassure staff who have been understandably concerned about their future. But I am incredibly angry about the money that has been wasted on consultants, lawyers and advisers – which runs to many millions of pounds. All that money could have been better spent training much-needed nurses. After almost three years of uncertainty, we still end up with a less integrated service than we started with, because social care has been transferred back to the County Council. The CCG was forced to go out to tender because of the Health and Social Care Act imposed by Conservatives and Liberal Democrats – Labour will abolish it, and build genuine integration through co-operation, not competition.

Daniel_Zeichner_head3.jpgBefore MPs voted on whether the UK should join air strikes in Iraq. Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner says that having consulted people across Cambridge, he finds that although there are strong views both for and against, most people are sceptical, and he shares that scepticism:

Everyone is horrified by the barbarism of ISIL – but that isn’t the question. The question is whether having RAF bombers involved in this campaign makes a long-term solution more or less likely. ISIL wants to portray their cause as a war against the West – and we risk giving them exactly what they seek. Just a year ago, we were poised to bomb the other side – which shows just how complicated this situation is. In these circumstances, my view is that the UK should give every humanitarian and technical support, but should not join the air strikes.

Ed_Miliband_Daniel_Zeichner.jpgEd Miliband’s speech to Labour Conference could have been written for Cambridge, says Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate, Daniel Zeichner. As one of 6 key pledges, Ed Miliband promised that in the next 10 years, he would work to ensure that Britain is a world leader in green technology, with a million additional high technology jobs. With Cambridge at the leading edge of clean-tech technology, Mr Zeichner says that Cambridge will be key to delivering Labour’s vision:

Ed Miliband’s speech today could have been written for Cambridge. The promise to make Britain a world leader in green technology puts Cambridge at the heart of Labour’s vision for our economic future – with high quality, well-paid jobs the key, rather than the race to the bottom that we have seen in recent years. Reforming the outdated House of Lords, enfranchising young people, and doubling the number of homes for first-time buyers will resonate with many in Cambridge. Finally putting apprenticeships on an eqaul footing with universities could be transformational – but will require a big response from many of our companies. It is in their interest, but will take active Government intervention, which only Labour will provide, to make it happen.

Mr Zeichner and Councillor Richard Johnson visited the Cambridge and District CAB in Devonshire Road in response to detailed research carried out into the impact of welfare reform on people in Cambridge and surrounding areas. The report includes a number of case studies detailing the impact of a range of controversial changes, including the Bedroom Tax, the Benefit Cap, the move to much more punitive sanctions on people seeking employment, and examples where people are now left with absolutely no money for weeks at a time.
