Radio Cambridgeshire today highlighted the report from Oxfam that reveals the massive growth in use of foodbanks - a tale of two Britains. Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner told Andie Harper that in Cambridge, foodbank use had doubled last year and the year before, with over 1650 children fed by the foodbank last year. He argued that something significant has changed in the last few years, with a very changed labour market relying at the bottom on low pay and zero-hours contracts, which leave families with little left over to buy food.

I was delighted to meet leading members of the students union at Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge today to support the campaign against the huge cut to Disabled Support Allowance made by Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable. Thanks to incompetence in his department, a big budget over-run means that students with disabilities at universities like ARU are taking a major hit. Some 1800 students at ARU are affected - why on earth do the Lib Dems in the Coalition think it's ok to hand people earning a million pounds a fifty thousand cash-back, while taking money off students with disabilities? Tough choices? No - wrong choices.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper MP was in Cambridge ahead of voting in next week’s local and European elections. Ms Cooper visited the Cambridge Women’s Resource Centre which offers vital services to women in and around Cambridge, including accredited training, emotional and practical support, and networking and friendship opportunities. She met a range of local community workers who particularly focus on tackling domestic violence, and they explained the continuing challenges faced by many women.

Soaring rents in Cambridge are forcing more and more people onto housing benefit – and pushing up the welfare bill. Figures obtained by Labour show that the number of working people in Cambridge claiming housing benefit rose by 55% between May 2010 and November 2013. While the overall numbers of people claiming housing benefit barely rose (up 2% from 7676 to 7825), the numbers of people in work claiming housing benefit leaped from 1040 to 1608 – a 55% increase.

The Marshall Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious societies in Cambridge. It was established in 1927, named after Sir Alfred Marshall, and members have included John Maynard Keynes, Nicholas Kaldor and Joan Robinson.

George Osborne was in Cambridge last week trumpeting investment in a new polar research ship. Speaking on BBC Look East, Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner welcomed any additional funding, but pointed out that whereas investment in science doubled during the period of Labour Government, it has been frozen by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, resulting in a real-terms cut of around 15%:
