Daniel Zeichner, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Cambridge, has said that the proposals from Cambridgeshire County County to transfer services for older people and occupational therapy back to the County Council are to be welcomed but has raised concerns about the future of other services delivered by Cambridgeshire Community Services across the County, including Brookfields Hospital in Cambridge. The County Cabinet is meeting on Tuesday 5 March to consider the proposals which would mean those services being brought back into the public sector and the direct control of the County Council.

David Cameron was the big loser in Eastleigh, according to Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner speaking to Radio Cambridgeshire today. Pressed on the Andy Harper show, Mr Zeichner said that Eastleigh was not the kind of seat Labour needed to win to form the next Government, unlike Cambridge. He argued that Ed Miliband had faced a similar test a few months ago at the Corby by-election, where Labour took the seat from the Conservatives. Mr Zeichner contrasted Eastleigh where Liberal Democrats have continued to do well in local elections with Cambridge where they have been losing council seats and where Labour beat them 2 to 1 in the most recent elections.

On Saturday my thoughts as we march against the EDL will be with the people who can’t march, the people who are advised not to step out in their own city. The advice from the police to the Muslim community is absolutely right – to stay away from the EDL, to avoid giving them the trouble they crave.  But that shows what is so wrong with the EDL and their fellow travellers. They now don’t stand for election because they know they have no support. Instead they turn up in peaceful, tolerant cities like ours  to make trouble and to try and instil fear. And to a limited extent, they succeed.  They have had far too much publicity from this stunt.  A handful of people – totally unrepresentative, causing huge cost and disruption.  And stopping members of our community going about their lawful business.

Over a hundred people packed in to the Arbury Community Centre last Saturday to take part in Labour’s ‘Your Britain’ discussion. Three shadow ministers made opening contributions and then joined in detailed discussions in small groups, alongside policy experts with facilitators on hand to keep the discussions moving. East of England MEP Richard Howitt gave a powerful account of the current meat industry crisis, highlighting the foolishness of Tory Eurosceptics like Environment Secretary Owen Patterson – if Britain is sidelined from EU decision-making we have no influence over the EU-wide food-chain. Jack Dromey argued that a major house-building programme will be central to any economic recovery, while Huw Irranca-Davies made a powerful attack on the erosion of workers rights under the coalition. Catherine McKinnell led the workshops through the complexity of the international tax system.

Cambridge Labour Parliamentary spokesperson Daniel Zeichner has backed Ed Miliband’s attack on David Cameron’s EU gamble, which he says puts Britain’s economic future in peril, and key research funding for Cambridge at risk: “Cambridge in particular is a city which needs to be closely engaged with the European Union. To keep his fractious back-benchers quiet, Cameron has been forced to concede a referendum years ahead on the basis of a fantasy negotiation that no-one else in Europe will take part in. This is a nonsensical position that creates years of uncertainty, damaging investment and making future planning by research intensive areas such as ours much more hazardous.
