Ed Miliband was in Cambridge today (April 15th) - and wowed a large crowd of many hundreds with a powerful speech before responding enthusiastically to a barrage of questions. He had arrived half an hour earlier, starting by walking through Petty Cury and along Sidney Street, talking to surprised passers-by who found themselves quickly surrounded by cameras. Guardian pundit Jackie Ashley, fresh from interviewing Douglas Alexander at Cambridge Wordfest yesterday, found that an expected day off suddenly became business as usual as her shopping expedition was interrupted by the Labour leader.

The Cambridge News recently reported leading local entrepreneur David Cleevely’s lament  that in Cambridge, our politics “are pedestrian and sub-scale.” He continues: “we need to have enough local political ambition to match the world-beating technology here, the ability to promote Cambridge on the world stage in a way that is appropriate for a world-class centre, and we don’t do that.”   All of us, but  particularly those responsible for political leadership in Cambridge, should wake up to his challenge.

The big Liberal Democrat idea - the £10k tax threshold, helps the wealthy far more than poorer people. Protestors in Cambridge against the Coalition Government’s Bedroom tax will be addressed by Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner at an event in the city tomorrow. Mr Zeichner will attack the measure as “mean and vindictive”. He will point out that the key moment came early last year, when Labour tabled an amendment in the House of Lords saying that people should only be liable to the under-occupancy charge if there was suitable local alternative accommodation available.
