Bring back the dog licence!

Cambridge Labour Parliamentary candidate Daniel Zeichner is calling on the Government to bring back the dog licence, after Home Secretary Alan Johnson today launched a crackdown on dangerous dogs as part of Labour’s campaign against anti-social behaviour.

The new legislation specifically addresses the case of a postman in Trumpington savaged by rottweilers whilst trying to deliver post. When the case came to court it was dismissed by the judge as the attack took place on private land. The government is now responding to concern over this issue by extending the Dangerous Dogs Act to cover private property.

Mr Zeichner backed the government’s changes but says they need to go further: "On some Cambridge estates, irresponsible dog owners are a consistent problem, leaving other people fearful. While today’s measures are welcome, we should go further. I have long supported the RSPCAs argument that we need a comprehensive registration scheme which would make it far easier for police and dog wardens to act against irresponsible owners."
