Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner praised the generosity of the people of Cambridge in welcoming refugees and called on the Government to act to help the most vulnerable in a debate in Parliament.

Mr Zeichner spoke in support of a change in the law to help 3000 unaccompanied refugee children and end detention for pregnant mums.

There are 26,000 unaccompanied child refugees in Europe, and charities estimate 10,000 unaccompanied children have gone missing since entering Europe.

In 2015, 69 pregnant women were detained, and 99 pregnant women were detained in 2014.

Highlighting the recent refugees event at the Guildhall, Mr Zeichner said: “Cambridge welcomes refugees. That was the message from the fantastic Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign event.

Cambridge people are coordinating offers of help from individuals and organisations across Cambridgeshire, and providing vital support and aid to refugees in the camps at Calais.

I hope that there will be enough members on the Government side willing to listen, and to reflect the basic generosity and decency of the British people.”
