Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge criticised the Government for its announcements in the Spring 2017 Budget.

Speaking at the conclusion of proceedings, Mr Zeichner said: “This Budget is just more of the same from the Tories. The occupants of Downing Street might have changed, but the policies are the same.

“Our country is in desperate need for investment, in our public services, in our infrastructure and in our research sector and yet the Chancellor is continuing down the ruinous path set out by his predecessor who – lest we forget – missed all of his self imposed fiscal targets.

“This Government should be urgently addressing the crisis facing our NHS and the care sector and yet it is spending money on expensive new grammar schools, that no one in Cambridge wants. This Budget was an opportunity for Philip Hammond and Theresa May to give our NHS the funding it needs, instead they are focussing on cutting corporation tax and giving tax breaks to the very wealthy.

“The Government’s small giveaways today won’t solve the crisis in our country. We urgently need real investment in our communities, not more soundbites from this Tory Government. While the Chancellor tinkers, in the real world many Cambridge businesses and institutions are grappling with the brutal realities of Brexit – and again, he was silent.”
