Daniel Zeichner MP has met Cambridge cabbies who say they are being ignored by the county council over their claims a hi-tech rank signal system does not work.

Back in 2013 a new system was installed so that taxis could wait on the “feeder” rank in Drummer Street and then a sign would alert them when a space became available on the main St Andrew’s Street rank.

The system is similar to that used to show drivers when there are free spaces in car parks.

However angry cabbies say the sign on Drummer Street has never worked properly often leaving scores of cabbies on Drummer Street while the St Andrew’s Street rank is empty. Taxi driver Rashel Mohammed, a member of the Cambridge Hackney Carriage Association says he and his colleagues are forced to phone each other up rather than rely on the “dodgy” sign which cost tax payers £30,000.

“I am speaking to the county council about the concerns taxi drivers have raised with me. This is a long running saga and it’s high time it was sorted out. A city like Cambridge ought to be able to get the technology right rather than taxi drivers being left in the dark as to whether or not to drive to the city’s main taxi rank.”
