Following the news that a consultation has today been launched on the system to replace the current school funding formula, Daniel Zeichner MP said:  “I welcome this change to the national funding formula for schools, and pay tribute to the long-running campaign led by the Cambridge News.

This long-term change should make a significant difference to schools across Cambridgeshire. Cambridge pupils have suffered from chronic underfunding in the classroom for decades because of years of underinvestment by successive Conservative Cambridgeshire county councils.

However I am disappointed that the funding shake-up will remove local authorities from the process.

Now we must look to make sure that central Government genuinely provides the resources that our schools need -; with cost pressures rising many schools are likely to remain hard-pressed.”
