Us fan Daniel Zeichner MP has backed Cambridge United’s mission to reboot our national game in a special meeting in the House of Commons.

The Cambridge team is part of an organisation called Fair Game which wants to see football run for the fans with the goals of sustainability, integrity, transparency and community at its heart.

In Parliament Fair Game unveiled a 66-page report called Solutions for Our National Game.

Now Mr Zeichner agreed to take their case to the Government’s Sport Minister.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: “Clubs are at the heart of communities but we need a fair playing field. That means fan engagement and financial sustainability and transparency. We all remember what happened when we played Man U and got the windfall TV revenue – imagine what we could do with a longer term plan for redistribution of TV cash.”

“Currently a club relegated from the premier league gets a £50m parachute payment. That is more than the 48 clubs in League 1 and League 2 get in total. That’s the problem we have to solve to get a sustainable, and fair, game.”

Cambridge United CEO Ian Mather, who spoke at the event, said, “It was good to engage with MPs in Westminster today, and to have the support of Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner. There is a growing sense that radical change to the way football is managed in this country is needed. It is time to reset to make football sustainable for future generations of fans.”
