Labour MP for Cambridge, Daniel Zeichner says that if there are any compulsory redundancies at Marshall Aerospace, then proper support must be provided for those affected, after the company announced today that they will begin a consultation proposing a reduction of jobs in the firm.

Marshall Aerospace have released a statement detailing their plans to implement a new strategy that will strengthen the firm’s competitive position internationally and make it more sustainable for the future, however the plans will potentially include job losses for 300 people.

Daniel has stated that he will be working with UNITE and with public agencies to ensure that any job losses will be handled with extreme care so that those workers and families are supported adequately.

Daniel says, “this news is a real blow to hundreds of local families and to Cambridge in general. Marshall is a highly-respected local employer who do not take such actions lightly.

I have spoken to the company and to UNITE who represent many workers likely to be affected and I have expressed my concerns. It is clear that the company feels that these changes are necessary to maintain further competitiveness, but it is equally essential that those who lose their jobs are given every support to find alternative employment.

We will do all we can to help smooth the blow, but I have frequently said that Cambridge’s future success is not assured and this is a harsh and very real reminder.”
