Daniel Zeichner MP got behind the counter at the Cambridge Cheese Company to serve eco-concerned customers who have brought their own containers to buy the shop’s tasty cheese, olives, chutneys and preserves.

Mr Zeichner is holding a special summit to discuss how to cut down on food packaging ahead of a debate he is leading in Parliament in response to a petition signed by 200,000 people calling for businesses to do more.

Daniel Zeichner MP said:

“The petition has made me realise just how much needless packaging we use – even the fruit and veg aisles in many supermarkets are full of rolls of plastic bags. Well done to Jacky and the Cambridge Cheese Company for taking a stand and starting to do something different. I know from the hundreds of letters and emails I get on this subject that people are ready to make changes in their lives to help cut down on waste and save the planet.”

Cambridge Cheese Company owner Jacky Sutton-Adam explained to the MP how she is encouraging shoppers to bring along their own boxes, jars and bags. She started the bring your own jar scheme in August last year and now has seventy customers who regularly bring their own.

Later in the day, Mr Zeichner and Ms Sutton-Adam took part in a summit organised by the Parliament Petitions Committee which will be attended by local businesses, a circular economy consultant, Cambridge Carbon Footprint and Cambridge Sustainable Food.

Figures show a quarter of all domestic waste is packaging, which can be difficult or sometimes impossible to recycle.
