Commenting on the Government’s Summer Statement, Daniel Zeichner MP said:

“I welcome any measures that improve our energy efficiency and moves to create more jobs for young people. But this is not ambitious enough. It’s is a build back plan, but not a build back better plan.

We have already seen a wave of businesses, independents and chains, announcing job losses in the city. It has been especially heartbreaking to hear from small business owners who are seeing their life’s work slipping through their fingers because of a temporary lack of cash flow. The government should look again at its one-size-fits-all approach which is unfairly penalising high-rate areas and sectors especially badly hit by lockdown.

As a country we should be demanding better for our young people. We want decent full-time jobs, paid the real Living Wage. Government action  on creating jobs for young people is welcome, but better targeted we could create a zero carbon army to tackle the climate emergency with more investment in nature conservation, driving forward renewable energy, helping our manufacturers be part of the green transition and a plan for our transport network.

“The French government has promised 15 billion euros for a green recovery, the German government 40 billion euros. The UK government is way behind.

“And where is the thanks for so many of our key workers? From NHS staff, to carers, to posties, millions of people have stepped up and done the right thing, but are seeing no recognition.”
