Government Brexit-bluster is threatening Britain’s finances, future trade deals and the rule of law, warned Daniel Zeichner MP today.

Mr Zeichner was speaking in the Commons after the shock resignation of the Government’s top lawyer, after No 10 decided to introduce a law which could change part of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement relating to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

“Signing an international treaty isn’t a game, it’s a commitment” warned Mr Zeichner. The MP cited University of Cambridge Professor Catherine Barnard’s worrying assessment. She says if the Government unilaterally change the international treaty they signed, this could trigger a process involving months of arbitration, see the UK fined a lump sum of cash, and scare off future potential trade partners

Daniel Zeichner MP wants to know what will happen to any Brexit-bluster minister who ignores the legal advice they are given, and leaves the UK open to such a damaging process.

He said: “In The NI Protocol is not perfect but it guaranteed there would be no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. That’s now in law and it has been agreed by all sides. You can’t just then pretend it doesn’t exist because it doesn’t suit you. If any government minister is so arrogant to do so I would like to know what the consequences are.”
