Daniel Zeichner MP reacted with fury after Tory MPs failed to back a Labour call to fund free school meals throughout the holidays in a debate in Westminster on Wednesday.

With half term coming up next week and the Christmas break looming, Mr Zeichner is calling on the Government to ensure that no child goes hungry during the coronavirus pandemic.

In Cambridge 1,916 children will lose out when the Government withdraws support for the provision of free school meals.

The October half term comes as millions of families face a furlough cliff-edge that could see jobs across the city at risk.

Daniel Zeichner MP said:

“Hundreds of families face the prospect of losing their livelihoods because the government has lost control of the virus.

“The government’s sink-or-swim plans for support could leave thousands of children at risk of going hungry over the school holidays. Luckily here in Cambridge the voluntary sector and the Council do an amazing job feeding families, but I don’t want to see anyone slip through the net.

“Now is the time to act. Families should not be the victims of the government’s incompetence. It is disgraceful that Boris Johnson and his MPs will not put hungry children first.”
