Justice for Giulio Vigil 

Daniel Zeichner MP will attend a vigil organised by Cambridge Amnesty International Group which will be held this Sunday 24 January at 6.30pm for Giulio Regeni the Cambridge PhD student who was murdered in Egypt in 2016.

Participants will obverse a minute’s silence at the online vigil to remember the Cambridge student.

It is now five years since Giulio Regeni who had travelled to Egypt to undertake research on the trade union movement in Cairo was brutally murdered.

On the evening of January 25 2016, Giulio went missing. Nine days later, on the 3 February 2016, Giulio’s body was found on the outskirts of Cairo with signs that severe torture had been inflicted on him.

The killers of the PhD student have never been brought to justice. At the end of last year Italian prosecutors found that Egyptian security officials were behind the kidnap and torture but Egypt has dropped its inquiry into his murder.

Daniel Zeichner MP who will speak at the vigil said: “Once again we gather in sadness to mark the death of a student with so much potential. Last year the Italian probe made some progress but were again met with obstruction from the Egyptian government. I have consistently called on our government to give support to our Italian partners and assist in bringing pressure to bear on the Egyptian authorities. Giulio’s friends, family and colleagues deserve to know the truth.”
