Over a hundred people packed in to the Arbury Community Centre last Saturday to take part in Labour’s ‘Your Britain’ discussion. Three shadow ministers made opening contributions and then joined in detailed discussions in small groups, alongside policy experts with facilitators on hand to keep the discussions moving. East of England MEP Richard Howitt gave a powerful account of the current meat industry crisis, highlighting the foolishness of Tory Eurosceptics like Environment Secretary Owen Patterson -; if Britain is sidelined from EU decision-making we have no influence over the EU-wide food-chain. Jack Dromey argued that a major house-building programme will be central to any economic recovery, while Huw Irranca-Davies made a powerful attack on the erosion of workers rights under the coalition. Catherine McKinnell led the workshops through the complexity of the international tax system.

Cambridge Labour Parliamentary candidate Daniel Zeichner organised the event with the Regional Labour Party:

“The Cambridge Your Britain event attracted a big audience from across Cambridgeshire, including young people who were clearly excited to be part of a real policy discussion with prominent Labour politicians. It is Labour that is generating the ideas at the moment -; on the side of young people in Cambridge who are struggling with high rents, unaffordable housing and ever-rising bills.”
