Local MP Daniel Zeichner is urging Cambridge residents to “b positive” and support a big drive for new blood donors as part of National Blood Week.

There are currently 6470 blood donors in Cambridge but more are urgently needed at the blood donor centre in Long Road.

There is a particular need for more men to become donors and for more donors with O negative blood. Between 2014 to 2018, there was a 13% increase in the proportion of O negative blood being used to hospitals.

More than 200,000 new donors are needed to give blood every year across England to replace those who can no longer donate regularly due to things like ill health, foreign travel or pregnancy.

Mike Stredder, Director of Blood Donation for NHS Blood and Transplant, said:

“We’re incredibly grateful to Daniel Zeichner for his support. We know many people don’t realise how important blood is until their life, or a relative’s life, is saved by a donor. We can only keep supplying blood if people keep registering new donors. During National Blood Week, please become a new blood donor, and start your own blood donation story.”

Daniel Zeichner MP who regularly gives blood and is a Bronze donor card holder is hoping to transfuse his enthusiasm to others. He said:

“You never know when you might need blood but if the worst happens you would want there to be a ready supply. Giving blood is a simple but amazing thing to do. You can become a real lifesaver. That’s why I’m calling on more Cambridge residents to donate.”
