Protestors in Cambridge against the Coalition Government’s Bedroom tax will be addressed by Cambridge Labour Parliamentary Candidate Daniel Zeichner at an event in the city tomorrow. Mr Zeichner will attack the measure as “mean and vindictive”. He will point out that the key moment came early last year, when Labour tabled an amendment in the House of Lords saying that people should only be liable to the under-occupancy charge if there was suitable local alternative accommodation available.

When it came to the Commons, that amendment was supported by a handful of Liberal Democrats, but not by Cambridge MP Julian Huppert. The amendment was defeated -; and now vulnerable people in Cambridge face the consequences:

“A year ago, I warned that these proposals were mean and vindictive. I do not believe that anyone who voted Liberal Democrat in Cambridge in 2010 understood that this was what they were voting for. Cambridge is better than that. Britain is better than that. We are not a mean vindictive, society. But we have a mean and vindictive Government. This miserable measure will do nothing to reduce under-occupancy, but will do real harm to some of our most vulnerable fellow citizens.”
