In September, the Prime Minister was telling the BBC that without tolling, vital improvements to the A14 wouldn’t go ahead. Today, it is widely anticipated that in tomorrow’s autumn statement, the Government will perform a spectacular u-turn and withdraw their controversial plans to introduce tolls.

Cambridge Labour Parliamentary candidate Daniel Zeichner says that the change of heart is welcome, but that another year has been wasted and that the Government must not allow the timetable to slip further: “This is a handbrake turn from a Prime Minister who only a few weeks ago was telling us that the improvements couldn’t go ahead without tolling. Labour rightly expressed concern about these plans and said we would review them on coming to office. As on so many other issues in the last few weeks, this is another panic-induced u-turn from David Cameron. My concern is that this will cause further delays -; jobs, homes and economic recovery in our region hinge on these improvements, and shouldn’t be put at risk by an unstable Government unable to stick to any plan for more than a few months.”
