Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, celebrates today’s news that the EU member states have today approved an EU-wide ban on neonicotinoids due to their harmful effects on bees.

This ban on the bee-harming pesticides will come into effect by the end of 2018. Neonicotinoid use will no longer be permitted outside, only in closed greenhouses.

Mr Zeichner, a long-time supporter of bees and champion of environmental policy, comments: “This is fantastic news. I’m relieved that the EU has decided to approve this ban, after I have campaigned on this in Parliament, asking Michael Gove to ban these harmful pesticides many times. We managed to change Gove’s mind on this in November, and I’m glad that the EU have now decided to roll this out internationally.”

“Bees are vital to our food and crops production, pollinating around 75% of crops. This is a great example of the brilliant collaborative work that the EU is capable of, improving environmental standards. I’m buzzing!”
