Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, has called on the region’s Traffic Commissioner to exercise dedicated powers and respond to the poor bus service being delivered by Stagecoach East in and around Cambridge following months of disruption for bus users.

As a Member of the Transport Select Committee, Mr Zeichner is aware of the powers held by Traffic Commissioners to intervene when operators continue to fall short of the expected timetabled services. Interventions are rare, however the issues with Stagecoach services have persisted for some months causing constituents to contact the MP about the situation.

Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, said: “Over the last few months, I have heard repeated stories from people about the extent of the problems with Stagecoach buses in and around Cambridge. I am aware of people being repeatedly late for work due to buses not turning up, people waiting for up to an hour for a service that should run every 15 minutes and overcrowding on buses during peak times. There is a huge level of frustration among bus users and quite frankly something needs to be done to restore customer confidence.“
“I am calling on the Traffic Commissioner to look at the data on how reliable services have been in recent months and intervene if abject failures are indicated. It is easy for Stagecoach to say they don’t have the drivers, but if they can’t deliver the advertised timetabled service, they need to amend it so people can plan their journeys accordingly. There needs to be better communication because the public should not have to just wait if a timetabled service doesn’t run, particularly as the nights get colder and darker.”

Daniel Zeichner, was heavily involved in taking through the 2017 Bus Services Act through Parliament for the Labour Party as the then Shadow Transport Minister. Since becoming an MP he has taken a particular interest in the bus system and the experiences of bus-users. Last summer, Mr Zeichner long argued that bus users were under-represented in and around Cambridge and it led him to hold the first Bus Users Forum in Cambridge. This event paved the way for the Cambridge Area Bus Users group.
