Speaking in the Commons, Daniel Zeichner MP has slammed the Government for failing to match the scale of ambition needed to deliver a green economic recovery from the pandemic.
Mr Zeichner was responding for the Opposition to a report by the Environmental Audit Committee, which has criticised the Government’s green recovery initiatives for not going far enough, and called for more ambitious action in next week’s budget to support a low-carbon economy and nature recovery.
The report highlights that the Government is currently not on track to meet legally-binding net zero targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and has missed international targets for protecting biodiversity.
Mr Zeichner said: “It’s vital is that we now deliver an economic recovery from this pandemic that tackles the combined challenges of the unemployment crisis and climate and ecological emergency. The Government is lagging behind, when we need to be delivering the jobs and infrastructure of the future and investing in nature recovery. Frankly, as an example leading into the COP26 global summit on climate change which Britain will be hosting this year, the Government’s lack of ambition on this is shambolic.’
