There needs to be a fast-track system so experienced healthcare professionals can use their skills to help the NHS in the fight against coronavirus.

English speaking Diana Mayoral, is a Spanish qualified nurse. She is in the process of applying to join the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register which involves an English language test. But her test which was scheduled for 5 April has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner contacted the Nursing and Midwifery Council who confirmed “there are currently no plans in place to amend the language requirements for applicants in the wake of Covid-19.”

He said: “This is ridiculous. Diana has a short window of time to make a decision over whether she returns to Spain to practise in Barcelona where she is fully registered as a nurse, or remains in Cambridge to assist the NHS. If the Nursing and Midwifery Council is unwilling to move, then the Government needs to force them to act.”
