Following Professor Stephen Hawking’s endorsement of Labour Daniel Zeichner, more leading Cambridge academics have come together to sign the joint letter below:
This election is about values. We believe Britain should be compassionate, outward-looking, and aspirational for its young people, regardless of their economic or social background. As academics at Cambridge University we are proud of its improving record on access. However, we are aware that tackling inequality and further improving university access will be challenging. We cannot do this alone. Cambridge needs an MP who will fight for social justice, equality and opportunity, across the UK and here in Cambridge.
By voting for the Bedroom Tax, a rise in VAT, budgets which have cut science and mental health funding, and to scrap Educational Maintenance Allowance, Julian Huppert has demonstrated a lack of commitment to these aims.
For an MP and a government that will scrap the Bedroom Tax, save the National Health Service, fight for an accessible education system, create more employment by growing the economy, provide more apprenticeships and improve job security, there is only one choice in Cambridge in this election. That choice is Labour.
