Daniel Zeichner MP has welcomed Cambridge University’s call for the County Council to re-think its plans to turn off Cambridge’s streetlights between midnight and 6am.

The University’s most recent travel survey shows that almost 50% of staff members and 90% of students walk or cycle to the University.

They are concerned about the potential safety impact of the County Council’s proposals on them and believe that unlit streets will make it harder for pedestrians and cyclists to be seen, and will increase the number of accidents.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: “The University has backed up what we have all been saying. Cambridge is a unique city when it comes to the numbers of cyclists and pedestrians out in the dark.  We can’t be treated like the rest of rural Cambridgeshire. The county council need to urgently think again and put the safety of Cambridge’s first.”
