Daniel Zeichner MP’s statement was made at the Junior Doctor Strike rally at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

“I know that none of you want to be taking this action. You are Doctors -; caring for patients is what you do. But it is because you care that you are protesting today -; you know that the changes being imposed by the Government will harm not just you, but future colleagues, and, of course, patients. This is an unnecessary dispute, generated by Jeremy Hunt, and it is for him to end it.

It is his plans to make doctors work longer hours that is the heart of the disagreement, and only he can solve it, by withdrawing the threat. I support you in your action because I believe in the National Health Service, but I also believe that the NHS will not be improved by attacking doctors.

On the contrary, the NHS relies on the goodwill and dedication of those who work within the service. So I thank you for your work. And I hope that the Government will take note of the strength of feeling amongst Junior Doctors, and think again.  It is never too late to come to the right conclusion -; Jeremy Hunt should withdraw his proposals.”
