Daniel Zeichner MP told the Commons that local people are “being taken for a ride by many of the bus operators” and called for communities to be given “real, genuine power to plan fares and timetables, and to reflect local needs.”

Labour called for the Bus Bill to bring long-term reform because the status quo is not working. Private bus operators have abandoned bus routes and services they found to be commercially unprofitable, leaving people stranded.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: “We’ve had the free market experiment since the 1980s and it isn’t giving us the service we need. It is bad enough in Cambridge, let alone the surrounding villages.

I’ve been on the record for many years calling for re-regulation of our buses because I don’t think de-regulation outside London has worked for people.”
