The Government were defeated in the Commons as MPs voted to stop their plans to change Sunday trading laws.

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner met Paul Philips, the SPAR shop manager on Barnwell Road to back the campaign to “keep Sunday special” said:

“I am really pleased for Paul and for other small business owners that tonight the Government were defeated on this issue.

Labour MPs led the fight against the Tories’ sweeping changes. Defeating the Government is a victory for everyone who supports the current Sunday Trading Act which is a great British compromise that has worked well for over 20 years.

It gives everyone a little bit of what they want. Shops can trade, customers can shop, and retail workers can spend time with their families.”
