Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner asked a Government Minister what progress has been made on securing a data adequacy agreement with the EU.
Following a visit to Ninja Theory in Cambridge last week, Mr Zeichner said the UK video games sector is one of the UK’s great success stories. UKIE, the trade industry association, has consulted members and they have confirmed the importance of continuing data flows for the UK’s technology sector.
Currently, the UK’s data protection rules must be in line with EU data protection rules, but we do not yet know what our country’s data protection rules will look like after leaving the EU. The Minister confirmed no progress has been made on securing a data adequacy agreement with the EU post Brexit.
Daniel Zeichner MP said: “Our important tech sector is underpinned by data being able to flow freely across Europe. These cross-border data flows are essential if we want this excellent sector to continue to grow. The Minister’s response today was disappointing. I hope the Government recognises the strategic and economic value of data for our country, and acts fast to put data protection at the heart of its negotiations.”
