A flagship government green homes grant scheme announced in July 2020 to help householders insulate their homes has been scrapped in what Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner describes as a “colossal failure”.

Installation of homes has plummeted since the Warm Front Scheme was scrapped in 2013 by the Conservative-Lib Dem Coalition Government.

The latest scheme the “Green Homes Grant” reached just 10% of the 600,000 homes the Chancellor promised would be improved and only allowed Cambridge City council to improve 278 homes.

There is an urgent need to green up and retrofit UK homes which on average lose heat three times faster than homes in Germany and Sweden meaning larger bills for householders and more environmental damage to the planet.

Daniel Zechner MP said: “We face a climate emergency and we need to radically change course. I still have not forgiven the government for taking a wrecking ball to the perfectly successful insultation scheme we had under the last Labour government. Since then they have created scheme after scheme that don’t work. The government talk the talk about building back better from the covid catastrophe but they don’t have the skills to do it. There is an opportunity here to invest in a green revolution, to improve our housing stock and create high quality jobs.”
