Daniel Zeichner, Member of Parliament for Cambridge, has criticised Cambridge Water for supplying drinking water containing dangerously high levels of toxic chemics to more than 1,000 people in Cambridgeshire.

Cambridge Water has admitted that in June last year it removed a supply containing four times the legal limit of perfluorooctane sulphonate. Shockingly the company chose not to inform the South Cambridgeshire residents that they had been drinking contaminated water.

The toxic chemicals in the water have been linked to health conditions, including increased cholesterol, low birth weight and suppressed immune response.

Mr Zeichner said “It is totally unacceptable that Cambridge Water have supplied more than 1,000 people in our county with water containing dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals. What is even more shocking is that the company chose not to inform those households that they had been exposed. This case illustrates how some private water companies are failing to fulfil their duty to provide clean and safe drinking water”.
