Forecasters believe that the mercury could pass the UK record of 38.7C (101.7F), set in Cambridge back 2019 and local MP Daniel Zeichner says it’s deeply worrying.

The MP said: “Cambridge is a record beater in all sorts of ways, but frankly the dubious honour of reaching the top temperature was something that’s always concerned me. 101 degrees is too hot – and that is definitely true for something even warmer. It shows that the climate emergency is a real and present danger.”

The Met Office has warned that there could be “population-wide adverse health effects” not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to “potential serious illness or danger to life.”

Mr Zeichner has urged Cambridge residents and  employers to follow public health advice and stay safe.
