Pupils at Shirley School will be learning all about healthy eating and the power of locally grown fruit and veg this Friday 30 September 2022 at 10am as part of British Food Fortnight.

The 4, 5 and 6 year olds who always enjoy a piece of fruit and veg each school day will meet their MP Daniel Zeichner to tell him what their favourite healthy snack is.

Teachers say pleasing plums packed full of Vitamin C and iron-full broccoli are firm faves in the school dining room.

Worryingly child malnutrition rocketed during the COVID pandemic with numbers of children being admitted to the hospital for malnutrition doubling, highlighting the importance of schemes to help promote healthy eating.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: ‘It is fantastic to be back at Shirley School. From apples and aubergines, to strawberries and shallots, to turnips and tomatoes our country produces a whopping 3.5 million tonnes of fruit and veg every year. A huge amount of that is grown on the fertile fields of Cambridgeshire and the Fens.

We all know a healthy diet is vital to give local children the very best start in life.  Fruit and veg jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre is crucial. But with a crippling cost of living crisis many local families are struggling to afford the basics which makes this scheme all the more important.”
