Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner is joining Fair Game and twenty-six football clubs, including Cambridge United in their demands for a White Paper reforming football governance and bringing in an independent watchdog to oversee financial regulation within the Football League.

Many teams are concerned for their future, with 70% of all teams in the top four divisions worried about their solvency.  Football clubs are seen as a vital part of each community and Fair Game has called for reforms to football in order to save those clubs.

Fair Game have called for the government to honour its manifesto commitment to reform football by making a commitment to a reform bill in the next King’s Speech.  A recent letter has been sent by twenty-six football clubs, including Cambridge United demanding the government move quickly on this commitment.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: ‘Football clubs like Cambridge United are a critical part of our local community… The work they do encouraging sport and representing our city is invaluable. The current system clearly needs reform to avoid beloved football clubs facing financial problems and even insolvency. The suggestions that Fair Game have made will, if enacted, ensure football clubs are run by responsible owners and that investment and revenue will be shared throughout the pyramid.  I call upon the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport to advance the reform agenda and honour their manifesto commitment.  I will stand firmly behind Cambridge United and the other teams in their quest for reform to the beautiful game.’
