Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner has reacted with concern regarding a report from the National Union of Students showing an acute cost of living crisis for students and serious financial instability abounding in higher education throughout the UK.

Many students feel that their bursaries and loans do not cover the cost of living, with this figure reaching 68% nationally and over half have cut down on food, in particular disabled students.  This is particularly acute in Cambridge where the cost of living for a student is estimated to be at £1700 per month.

The Cambridge University Students’ Union has run a campaign locally highlighting the very serious concerns regarding the cost of living in Cambridge.  They have raised serious concerns about the increasing cost of living in Cambridge meaning that students will be unable to remain in Cambridge or continue their studies.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: ‘The increase in the cost of living and pressure on students in Cambridge is very worrying. The inflation caused by this government’s bad decisions are playing havoc with our young people and this particularly affects Cambridge. I call upon the Chancellor of the Exchequer to provide support for students in the autumn statement.  I also hope to work closely with the universities and Students’ Unions in my constituency to find solutions for Cambridge.’
