Local MP Daniel Zeichner and Cambridge disability charity Papworth Trust have shown their support for disabled people at a special event in Parliament to mark the UN Day of Disability 2015.

The UN Day of Disability 2015 has been celebrated since 1992. The theme for this year’s campaign is access and empowerment for people of all abilities.

Vicky McDermott, chief executive of Papworth Trust, explained to Mr Zeichner how the Papworth Trust produces industry-leading facts and figures about disabled people and the challenges they face. Improving disability data and statistics is a vital tool to make Cambridge and other towns and cities more inclusive and accessible for all.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: “I’m delighted to support the Papworth Trust. There is still much to do to close the disability gap and provide equality of opportunity and I’m always inspired when I visit them in Cambridge by the work they do to allow more disabled people to live independent lives.”

Vicky McDermott said: “Papworth Trust believes that disabled people should be enabled to live independent lives with access to the same opportunities as everyone else. In order for that to happen we have to challenge the misperceptions that still exist about disabled people. We will continue to champion equality for disabled people and bring about social change.”
