After a shocking rise in the level of abuse shopworkers have endured during the covid pandemic, Daniel Zeichner MP visited the Histon Road Coop as part of “Respect for Shopworkers week”.

The local MP will meet Co-op Manager Paul Slade and Shane Spitty from the trade union Usdaw who will explain the results of a recent survey. The survey shows 76% of shopworkers say that abuse has been worse than normal during the Covid-19 pandemic and over half of them have been threatened by a customer.

Mr Zeichner has backed calls for the government to legislate to protect shopworkers. A parliamentary petition currently has over 70,000 signatures.

Daniel Zeichner MP says “It is frankly appalling that some people have responded to this pandemic by abusing shopworkers. At a time when we should all be working together to get through this national crisis, it is a disgrace that staff working to keep food on the shelves are being abused.”
