Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner has called on Parliament caterers to go low-carbon in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of Westminster.

Speaking at a low-carbon lunch at St John’s College MP Daniel Zeichner urged Westminster caterers to follow St Johns’ fantastic example and reduce the environmental impact of their food.¬†Eating a low carbon Fish dinner, he emphasised small measures add up to make a big difference when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint.

Mr Zeichner met Head of Catering Bill Brogan who explained to the MP that 20% of a person’s carbon footprint comes from the food they eat. Making small changes to catering practices as they have done at St John’s leads to an enormous environmental benefit.

The Cambridge MP said “the fact my fish was locally sourced and low-carbon makes it taste that much better. I’ve learnt a lot about low-carbon foods from Bill. Now Parliament needs to show leadership in its canteens and restaurants too.”

“Climate change is the greatest threat facing our planet, introducing the smallest of changes such as low-carbon meals goes a significant way to tackling this problem and I believe it is the duty of Parliament to lead the way.”
