The latest data from the Environment Agency reveals that 750 homes in Cambridge are at risk of flooding.

Four flood defence projects designed to protect 189 homes are under development at the Environment Agency in our area -; but with significant funding gaps are at risk of indefinite postponement.

The total cost of the projects at Brunswick Surface Water Flood Alleviation; Kelvin Close Surface Water Flood Alleviation; Kings Hedges and Arbury Estate, Surface Water Flood Alleviation; Riverside Surface Water Flood Alleviation is estimated to be £816k.But none of these projects are likely to go ahead without £381k of funding – leaving those 189 houses at risk of flooding.

Daniel Zeichner MP said:“It’s hard to overstate the economic and human cost of flooding. It doesn’t just damage property, it ruins lives.

“We’ve already seen flood alerts on the Cam this year, while tremendous thunderstorms saw Riverside properties flooded with six inches of water in the Summer.

“As the severity and frequency of flood events increases with climate change, and as more and more homes are built, so the number of people in Cambridge at risk will also rise.

“We urgently need robust defences -; and I am demanding that the government makes sure Cambridge is properly protected, today and into the future.”
