Cambridge MP, Daniel Zeichner, met residents and staff at ‘The Victoria Project’ on Victoria Road.

The Victoria Project is a specialist support centre for the homeless, particularly for those who have experienced addiction or mental health issues. The centre, run by Riverside, provides a support network and accommodation helping to give stability and a motivational atmosphere to those wishing to make a positive change to their lives.

The complex contains 34 rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities, communal space and a large garden. Social activities and support workers help residents tackle the issues related to their homelessness. Staff are on hand 24/7 and the project encourages people to set personal goals and seek the right detox treatments, mental health support and counselling.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: “The Victoria Project is doing a great job in very difficult circumstances, we know from the most recent data that homelessness has been on the rise for the last 5 years across Britain; with national cuts to benefits and local services compounding the issue.

“We are lucky in Cambridge to have recently secured a record amount of funding for homelessness services and to have a wide array of projects and staff working closely with those seeking to turn their lives around. Projects like this aim to empower people and give routine and support when and where it is needed – they are helping to change lives for the better.”
