Daniel Zeichner raised Cambridge’s “Catholic Church junction” in a Parliamentary debate about offences by drivers of moving traffic.

The four-way junction between Hills Road, Lensfield Road, Regent Street and Gonville Place is at the centre of congestion problems in Cambridge. Andy Campbell, Managing Director of Stagecoach Cambridgeshire, has consistently argued that one of the major problems facing buses in Cambridge includes the snarl-ups at the junction where a yellow box system had been removed after Cambridgeshire County Council reconfigured the junction.

Last year, Daniel Zeichner called upon the County Council to reinstate the yellow box at the junction but the authority has still not taken action.

Daniel Zeichner said: “More public transport journeys are made by bus than any other form of public transport but, sadly, the numbers of journeys and, in many cases, the speed of those journeys is in decline. The industry tells us that part of the problem is congestion.”

Daniel Zeichner’s comments came after he called for better enforcement of moving traffic offences including yellow boxes and banned turns. He argued that local councils should be empowered to enforce offences committed by drivers of moving traffic after police report they no longer have the resources to do so themselves.
