Daniel Zeichner, Member of Parliament for Cambridge welcomes the statement made today by both Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, and Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Transport regarding their commitment to Crossrail 2. After a productive meeting last week, the pair agreed that it is clear that London needs this new infrastructure to support its growth and allow it to continue as an economic powerhouse.

Crossrail 2 will benefit Cambridge by improving links across London, easing rail and underground congestion, and paving the way for faster train links from Cambridge to London Liverpool Street through Tottenham Hale’s four track expansion. Crossrail 2 developers have said that the project could give the East of England economy a £1.8 billion boost

Daniel says: “While I am pleased that the Government have committed to working on Crossrail 2, and have accepted that this is necessary investment for the South East, a funding deal has not yet been agreed. We can’t allow this to fall off the table. Crossrail 2 will beneft the entire passage from the Solent to the Wash, and create thousands of jobs across the country, so this is not just a London issue.”

Over the coming months ahead of the Autumn Budget it is vital that we keep the pressure on the Government to make sure that they deliver on this vital infrastructure -; and that the funding deal agreed is both fair and realistic.”
